Arrows drift downwind, faster in stronger wind. They run at 6× the real speed so the motion is easy to see.

Show dinghies and windsurfers

Three dinghies beat and run and four windsurfers reach across the wind, at least 250 m off the east shore. They're drawn 6× life size and sail at realistic speeds for the wind, sped up 6× like the arrows. Each is a little faster or slower than the others, and they slow to 0.6× in the Novice Area.

Show keelboats

Two club keelboats, drawn 3× life size and sailing at 3× real speed in this wind. One tacks and gybes in front of the marina, comes in through the south entrance and goes back out. The other practises in the open water inside the marina and makes approaches to J-Dock under sail, stopping beside the club boat tied up there.

Moving a slider switches to wind you set yourself, which is handy for teaching points of sail. Live readings come from one station, so the arrows show the same wind across the whole basin. Real wind varies near the breakwaters and the shore.

About this map

A free interactive 3D map of the South Sailing Basin and Berkeley Marina for the Cal Sailing Club, a nonprofit, volunteer-run sailing and windsurfing club at 124 University Ave in Berkeley, California. It shows live wind from the club's weather station, the club's sailing areas for each rating, hazards, and the charted lights and daybeacons.

For orientation and teaching only. Depths, shoals and silting change. Check the tide and the official NOAA chart before you sail.

Sailing areas by rating

Where each rating may sail, from the CSC Operating Rules (sections B and I). The club's Sailing Areas page is the official version.

Novice Area B.1: Where Novice windsurfers and Novice skippers sail, in wind under 10 knots: the water in the South Sailing Basin north of Hs Lordships restaurant and west of the 3rd dock, 100 yards off any downwind shore.
Junior Area B.2: Where Junior and J+ windsurfers and Junior skippers sail: within sight of the clubhouse, north of Ashby Ave and east of a line from the Emeryville Peninsula to Hs Lordships restaurant.
Senior Dinghy & Windsurf Area I.2: Where Senior windsurfers and Senior dinghy skippers sail: the Bay off Berkeley and Emeryville, out to the X buoy, between a line from the Emeryville Peninsula to Treasure Island and a line from the X buoy to César Chávez Park.
Senior Keelboat Area I.3: Where Senior keelboat skippers sail: the Bay north of a line from the Emeryville Peninsula to Treasure Island, east of a line from the Bay Bridge to the Richmond Jetty, up to a quarter mile off Brooks Island and the jetty.
Cruising Dinghy Area I.4: Where Cruising dinghy skippers sail: the east side of the Bay from Clipper Cove at Treasure Island north to Point Richmond.
Cruising Keelboat Area I.5: Where Cruising keelboat skippers sail: all of San Francisco Bay and its tributaries, and outside the Golden Gate as far west as a line from Point Bonita Light through Mile Rocks Light to the San Francisco shore.

Hazards

Harbor entrance 37°51.938′N 122°19.157′W: Three entrances lead in past the breakwaters, and the south one is the deepest. Most groundings happen just inside the breakwater, when boats cut the turn too close. The wind often shifts suddenly off the yacht club building.
Berkeley Pier 37°51.718′N 122°19.231′W: Closed to the public since 2015. The old pier runs about 2.5 miles out with a gap near the standing end. Give it a wide berth, and stay well off in a northerly, when it becomes a lee shore.
Ashby Shoal 37°50.658′N 122°19.513′W: Muddy sandbar between Berkeley and Emeryville that only shows above water at extreme low tides. The traditional spot for the club's shoal breakfast.
Berkeley Reef 37°52.471′N 122°19.989′W: Rocks about 0.4 nautical miles west of César Chávez Park, charted as awash at mean lower low water: just under the surface most of the time, and showing only at the lowest tides. The green Berkeley Reef Light 1 (flashing every 2.5 s) stands 120–145 ft southwest of them. Give the light at least 100 ft and never pass east or north of it.

Cal Sailing Club 37°51.784′N 122°18.830′W: Nonprofit, volunteer-run sailing and windsurfing club, 124 University Ave. Lessons and open houses launch into the South Sailing Basin.
J-Dock (club keelboats) 37°51.964′N 122°18.833′W: The club's keelboats berth at the outer end of J-Dock. In 2024 the City Council kept these berths (including slips 360–368) for sailing instruction.

Berkeley Reef Light 1 Fl G 2.5s: One green flash every 2.5 seconds. A green light on a post, with a square green daymark numbered 1. 13 ft above the water, seen up to 3 nautical miles. Marks Berkeley Reef: the charted rocks are 120–145 ft north and northeast of this light. Give it at least 100 ft and never pass east or north of it.
Berkeley Marina Channel Light 2 Fl R 4s: One red flash every 4 seconds. A red light on a post, with a triangular red daymark numbered 2. 15 ft above the water, seen up to 4 nautical miles. On the west end of the old Berkeley Pier. The rest of the pier ruins aren't lit.
Berkeley Marina Channel Light 3 Fl G 4s: One green flash every 4 seconds. A green light on a post, with a square green daymark numbered 3. 15 ft above the water, seen up to 4 nautical miles. On the club's range from the X buoy to the east end of the Bay Bridge.
Berkeley Breakwater Light 1 Q G: Quick green flashes, about one a second. A green light on a post, with a square green daymark numbered 1. 15 ft above the water, seen up to 4 nautical miles. South end of the Berkeley Breakwater.
Berkeley Breakwater Light 2 Fl R 2.5s: One red flash every 2.5 seconds. A red light on a post, with a triangular red daymark numbered 2. 22 ft above the water, seen up to 5 nautical miles. North end of the Berkeley Breakwater.
